What is Anxiety? Anxiety is often described casually, but as anyone who suffers from it can tell you, it can be downright debilitating. Even if we “know better” than to worry about something on a mental level, on an emotional level, anxiety seems like quite an uncontrollable experience. That’s because it’s designed to protect us.

Anxiety is part of our natural survival mechanism. Also known as the stress response, it’s our body’s way of warning us about a potential threat. It puts us on alert and makes us vigilant, hence the paralysis, racing heart, and sleepless nights that often accompany it. And sustaining this stress state for long periods of time has serious impacts not only on our health but our ability to fully engage with and enjoy life.

What Causes Anxiety?

The causes of anxiety are different for each person but are often not completely known to you while you’re experiencing it. That’s because your limbic brain is part of your unconscious mind, and can’t be accessed through rational thought processes.

It’s very common to be unaware of the exact cause of your anxiety. In our holistic treatment for healing anxiety, we see anxiety as a symptom of an underlying cause and use the healing journey to discover what that is.

What are the risk factors for anxiety?

Anyone can have anxiety, but certain factors increase its likelihood. These might include:

  • Substance abuse and addiction

Though its causes might not be obvious, anxiety usually doesn’t occur out of nowhere. Once we soothe the symptoms of anxiety, we can start to look at why you feel the way you do.

How do I cope with anxiety? 

Anxiety is commonly treated with medications – usually antidepressants (like Prozac or Zoloft) or benzodiazepines (like Xanax or Ativan). Some people also self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. But the problem with any of these methods is that they often ultimately cause more anxiety. They’re also extremely habit-forming and can quickly lead to an addiction – all of which compounds the issue and creates an even bigger problem than the original anxiety.

We’d like to offer the perspective that anxiety itself is sometimes a coping strategy; one that allows us to avoid issues that seem overwhelming.  In holistic anxiety treatment, it’s our job to find out what those issues are, and help you resolve them in a safe and supported way.
