What is Anxiety

What is Anxiety? Anxiety is often described casually, but as anyone who suffers from it can tell you, it can be downright debilitating. Even if we “know better” than to worry about something on a mental level, on an emotional level, anxiety seems like quite an uncontrollable experience. That’s because it’s designed to protect us.

Anxiety is part of our natural survival mechanism. Also known as the stress response, it’s our body’s way of warning us about a potential threat. It puts us on alert and makes us vigilant, hence the paralysis, racing heart, and sleepless nights that often accompany it. And sustaining this stress state for long periods of time has serious impacts not only on our health but our ability to fully engage with and enjoy life.

The Sanctuary’s holistic anxiety treatment program doesn’t take anxiety lightly. In fact, we see it as a surface-level symptom of an even deeper problem. We help you solve this by:

  • Creating a safe environment that lets you relax into the healing process
  • Treating anxiety symptoms holistically
  • Releasing any stress that’s physically stuck in the body
  • Supporting your recovery with an anti-inflammatory, brain-healthy diet
  • Finding and addressing the causes of your anxiety
  • Helping you avoid unwanted coping mechanisms

Our non-12 Step treatment for anxiety involves a healing journey that will transform your relationship to life.

Anxiety Symptoms

Anxiety can show up in a number of ways, including:

  • Nervousness
  • Restlessness
  • Racing heart
  • Shortness of breath
  • Muscle tension and pain
  • Hypervigilance – always feeling on alert
  • Shakiness
  • Sweating
  • Attention problems
  • Insomnia
  • Stomach issues
  • Weakness and fatigue

At its core, anxiety is essentially an excessive worry that’s disproportionate to what will actually happen. Part of what makes it so debilitating is that it can cause you to avoid the people, places or activities that tend to trigger it.

What Causes Anxiety?

The causes of anxiety are different for each person but are often not completely known to you while you’re experiencing it. That’s because your limbic brain is part of your unconscious mind, and can’t be accessed through rational thought processes.

It’s very common to be unaware of the exact cause of your anxiety. In our holistic treatment for healing anxiety, we see anxiety as a symptom of an underlying cause and use the healing journey to discover what that is.

What are the risk factors for anxiety?

Anyone can have anxiety, but certain factors increase its likelihood. These might include:

  • Unresolved trauma
  • The way you were parented as a child
  • Depression
  • Isolation
  • Illness
  • Minority stress
  • Substance abuse and addiction

Though its causes might not be obvious, anxiety usually doesn’t occur out of nowhere. Once we soothe the symptoms of anxiety, we can start to look at why you feel the way you do.

How do I cope with anxiety?

Anxiety is commonly treated with medications – usually antidepressants (like Prozac or Zoloft) or benzodiazepines (like Xanax or Ativan). Some people also self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. But the problem with any of these methods is that they often ultimately cause more anxiety. They’re also extremely habit-forming and can quickly lead to an addiction – all of which compounds the issue and creates an even bigger problem than the original anxiety.

We’d like to offer the perspective that anxiety itself is sometimes a coping strategy; one that allows us to avoid issues that seem overwhelming.  In holistic anxiety treatment, it’s our job to find out what those issues are, and help you resolve them in a safe and supported way.

Holistic, Non-12 Step Anxiety Treatment

At The Sanctuary’s holistic anxiety treatment center, we guide you to find the core issues driving your anxiety and address them. We begin treatment by calming down your nervous system, which allows you to feel more settled and comfortable in your own skin. We use energy therapies to access the limbic brain, where your anxiety lives, and bodywork to release the pent-up stress that you’re physically holding onto.

By getting out of your head and into your body, confusion falls away as you begin to see that you’re okay. This prepares you to hold the changes you experience throughout the treatment process.

Feeling Safe While Healing Anxiety

We understand that making sure you’re comfortable is the first priority. That’s why we get to know you and cultivate inner safety before beginning any vulnerable work. Even if this is your first experience with holistic therapies, that’s okay – we speak to you in a way you can understand. There’s no added pressure; we create a loving environment where you can relax and be yourself.

We see ourselves as a family: our clients and staff live onsite together, eat meals together, hang out together, and see each other as equals. Even after you leave, our dedicated staff are always available to talk and offer support.

Nutrition and Anxiety

Did you know that 90% of your serotonin is produced in your digestive tract? A growing body of research points to the importance of the gut-brain connection: that is, the link between what you eat and how you feel.

That’s why nutrition is a key component of our holistic anxiety treatment. Our program is completely immersive in every way. This includes eating a nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory diet designed to support your brain health, as well as drinking clean water, breathing fresh air, and connecting with the surrounding natural environment. Many of our clients say our campus feels less like a rehab and more like a life rejuvenation center.
