Non-12 Step Rehab

At The Sanctuary at Sedona, we understand very well how important it is for everyone to have a strong community of support — especially those who are struggling with the pain of addiction, codependency, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. 12-Step programs and accompanying AA meetings are great at providing a place for connection, and they help many people get clean from alcohol and drugs.

But some people find that the 12 Steps can only take them so far. They’re looking for something else: a deeper sense of meaning, a connection to self, a next step that can help them finally move past their addiction.

The Sanctuary is that next step.

Our Non-12 Step holistic approach is designed to heal the deep-level, root causes of addiction. We do this by offering holistic, integrative recovery treatments that simultaneously work on healing the mind, body, soul, and spirit.

“A safe space to sit with yourself and explore your core. A place to heal and be honest. A place to reconnect with what’s most important.”

“Really monumental in allowing me to experience life again.”

“Magical – come prepared to do the work and expect healing to happen.”

What Is Non-12 Step Rehab?

No two people are alike, and addiction, along with mental and emotional health issues, impact everyone differently. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is one of the most widely known paths to addiction recovery. This program is highly structured and more of a form of aftercare support than an actual addiction treatment program. Although AA and other 12-Step programs have helped many people struggling with addiction, they have their limitations, such as:

  • Does not view addiction as a disease — more as an unmanageable character defect
  • Requires members to surrender to a higher power
  • Focuses more on treating the behaviors associated with addiction rather than the underlying causes

Non-12 Step rehab offers a different approach that is more fluid and focused on an individual’s unique needs. Rather than relying on a model created almost 100 years ago, non-12 Step rehab provides evidence-based therapies and treatment modalities backed by addiction science research.

Instead of the structured, 12-Step program, each treatment plan is personalized to the individual. Clients are assessed by a professional intake team, which usually includes a medical and psychiatric professional. This initial examination allows your program to include treatment modalities that address your background, level of addiction and any mental or emotional difficulties you may be struggling with. By understanding these psychological and social factors, we can create an individualized treatment plan that addresses the comprehensive needs identified.

At The Sanctuary, we add a holistic element to our non-12 Step rehab approach. Although we offer traditional therapies, we add to them the wisdom and healing modalities gleaned from Indigenous wisdom traditions and alternative treatments. That means, alongside the latest clinical therapies and doctor-prescribed medications if needed, we offer complementary approaches like IV therapy, yoga, music therapy, nutraceuticals, life skills classes and more.

What Sets Non-12 Step Rehab Apart

Our Non-12 Step Treatment for addiction differs from mainstream approaches primarily in its core philosophy. AA asserts that you’re powerless over addiction — that being an addict is a quality of your character and an inescapable fact of life. But we believe differently — and so do the many clients who have found true healing at The Sanctuary after countless attempts at conventional rehabs.

We believe in your ability to change.

The belief in powerlessness creates a limited mental state that actually impedes your potential to progress beyond your current patterns and get to where you really want to be. But becoming aware of your own power to heal yourself, on the other hand, offers limitless potential. And this is what we help you to discover through the highly skilled use of a variety of therapies organized into an effective Non-12 Step rehab program.

What Types of Non-12 Step Addiction Treatments Are Available?

If you feel that AA or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are not the right options for you, non-12 Step addiction rehab facilities are available. Rehab programs like The Sanctuary rely on well-rounded, scientifically backed approaches to recovery. They use evidence-based addiction treatments and are led by highly trained addiction professionals, including psychiatrists, medical professionals, nurses, nutritionists and other skilled practitioners.

Non-12 Step Holistic Treatments at The Sanctuary

At The Sanctuary, our experienced team employs an array of methods for bringing all aspects of you that are affected by addiction back to health. We blend the latest peer-reviewed scientific and therapeutic practices with Indigenous wisdom traditions to provide you with a transformational experience.

Your comprehensive and personalized treatment program might involve detailed nutritional planning and supplement protocol to heal your brain, movement therapies to release trauma from your body, energy healing to rebalance your central nervous system or music therapy for communicating with your soul.

Other non-12 Step holistic treatments that we find highly effective for drugs, alcohol, behavioral addictions, and mental health concerns include:

  • Emotional self-regulation skills
  • Mindfulness meditation
  • Nutritional therapy
  • Energy medicine therapies
  • Guided imagery
  • Music therapy
  • Expressive art therapies
  • Sound healing
  • Movement therapy
  • Hiking and nature immersion
  • Trauma-sensitive bodywork
  • Yoga
  • Fitness
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance commitment therapy (ACT)
  • Couples and family therapy
  • Body image therapy
  • Depth psychology
  • Brain mapping
  • Individual and group process therapy

A selection of these therapies is integrated into a structured treatment plan that’s personalized to meet your needs, and that changes as necessary to ensure you’re always making ideal progress.

Our 30-Day Rehab Program

The Sanctuary’s non-12 Step rehab is a minimum 30-day program that includes 30 days of inpatient care, followed by 30 days of aftercare. While we recommend at least 30 days on campus to allow the new practices you learn to take root in your life, you’re welcome to extend your stay with us for as long as you need to complete this portion of your journey.

Our support for your healing process remains consistent even after your return home, when you’ll be in regular contact with your recovery coach, attend group and individual counseling sessions, and complete homework that advances your understanding of the addiction science you’ve learned thus far. And we’ll connect you with local groups as well as healers, coaches, and counselors we personally know, so that you have a strong support network to see you through your transition. You don’t have to go it alone — you’ll be supported for as long as you need.
