Heal, Repair, Recover:

Our Holistic Failure to Launch Treatment

Watching a capable adult child be unable to work, study or live independently can be scary and confusing for you as a parent or caregiver. If your loved one is experiencing this situation, take comfort in knowing that this is not a failure in parenting, nor does it reflect a personal shortcoming for your loved one. Failure to launch is a recognized behavioral health phenomenon with identifiable contributing factors.

The Sanctuary at Sedona works with individuals experiencing failure to launch. We are a residential holistic treatment center providing the support that your loved one needs to overcome their situation and transition into independent adulthood.

As pioneers in holistic mental health recovery, The Sanctuary has developed an integrated and science-backed failure to launch syndrome treatment. Our approach focuses on the root causes behind the condition, offering healing for the whole person. We support body, mind, soul and spirit throughout the recovery process. Rather than trying to manage the symptom, we look at everything that lies behind it to achieve effective treatment that can change a life.

What Is Failure to Launch?

Failure to launch syndrome is a recognized pattern that typically appears among young adults. It’s generally characterized by adult children who are living at home and still highly dependent on their parents. Because of this dependence, they might struggle to reach independence milestones in areas like work, school or living on their own.

In many cases, challenges like these are rooted in deeper needs, such as underlying mental health conditions. A holistic treatment approach can help uncover and address these layers with empathy and expertise, enabling people to find healing and independence.

Though this condition typically occurs in young adulthood, it can persist or resurface later in life. Whether you have a loved one experiencing failure to launch syndrome at 40 or 18, we’re here to support you and help your loved one find freedom in independence.

Signs to Look Out For

Here are a few common signs that a young adult may need professional support:

  • They’re not looking for work or going to school despite being capable.

  • They rely heavily on parents or loved ones for financial support, decision-making or daily structure.

  • They’ve withdrawn from friends, hobbies or responsibilities.

  • They have difficulty managing basic daily tasks or follow-through.

  • They have strong emotional reactions when parents try to encourage independence.

Underlying Issues That May Contribute to Failure to Launch

Failure to launch often occurs in conjunction with other conditions or challenges, such as:

  • Anxiety: In many cases, anxiety creates a fear of failure or judgment that can lead to avoidance.

  • Depression: If your loved one is facing depression, they may have low motivation, hopelessness and fatigue that make basic tasks feel impossible.

  • Trauma: Unresolved experiences can erode confidence and trust in one’s own capabilities.

  • ADHD: Those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or other executive functioning challenges may find it difficult to plan, start and follow through on tasks.

  • Substance use: Substances can often be a way to self-medicate underlying emotional pain, which can deepen a cycle of unhealthy behaviors.

  • Low self-confidence: When people feel the need to compare themselves to their peers, this can often create shame, which reinforces a desire for isolation.

Beyond individual circumstances, today’s young adults face unique pressures, from technology dependency to shifting social norms, including a cultural shift toward prolonged adolescence. Your loved one may be facing various challenges that contribute to their current situation.

The issues that contribute to highly dependent adult children often overlap and compound on one another. Treatment needs to take into account all underlying causes and use them to determine which tactics or treatment options are most effective. The best failure to launch programs will see your loved one as the whole person they are, rather than focusing only on a small part of the story.

What Is Holistic Treatment for Failure to Launch?

Failure to launch doesn’t necessarily have a single cause. It can stem from the whole body and mind. Those facing this condition deserve a well-rounded treatment approach that takes into account their whole self and the history that has impacted their growth and development. That’s what holistic treatment does.

Holistic treatment goes beyond symptom relief. It helps individuals identify and address the root causes of lingering patterns, supporting the journey toward authentic independence. Then, it takes clinical and evidence-based therapy, woven together with holistic modalities inspired by traditional wisdom and healing practices. A true holistic approach addresses the mind and body together in a single seamless process. At The Sanctuary at Sedona, we have pioneered this treatment model.

During holistic treatment for failure to launch, we tailor a custom treatment plan to each individual, rather than trying to fit everyone into a regimented program that doesn’t truly serve them. We account for unique backgrounds and needs, such as trauma, behavioral challenges and mental health issues. Then we address every part of life, including physical health, relationships, nutrition and emotional health, promoting true healing that comes from within.

Our Holistic Failure to Launch Treatment Program in Sedona, AZ

The Sanctuary offers holistic treatment in a residential structure. We provide a small, intimate setting, with a maximum of 14 clients at a time. There is a 30-day minimum, but we can help determine the right length for each situation. Each client receives a customized care plan, crafted by our expert team to fit their specific history and needs, ensuring every aspect of their healing process is thoughtfully considered. This program includes the following.

A Restorative Setting for Real Change

Healing begins with finding a place for true relaxation and comfort. The Sanctuary offers a serene and beautiful setting among the picturesque landscapes of Sedona, Arizona. This remote location offers your loved one the opportunity to leave behind life’s pressures and truly focus on healing. This stress-free environment gives stalled-out young adults the physical space to step away from old patterns and build new ones.

Meanwhile, they can heal the body with gourmet organic meals and physical activity. A state-of-the-art gym and 22-acre grounds offer plenty of opportunities to rebuild strength and vitality in ways that suit their preferences.

Building Motivation and Life Skills Through Clinical Therapy

Part of treatment involves science-based therapies, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which can help address the anxiety, depression, trauma and other factors driving parental dependency.

These structured, clinical counseling approaches can build executive function skills, helping your loved one learn how to plan, follow through and take accountability. Consistent practice and small wins can help rebuild motivation and restore confidence so clients feel empowered to take charge of their own lives.

Whole-Person Healing Through Holistic Therapies

Outside of clinical therapies, we also interweave holistic modalities into the healing journey. Approaches we offer may include music therapy, wellness IVs and energy medicine therapy. Together with clinical treatment, they can help drive deep healing of soul and spirit, stimulating healing and motivation at every level.

Boundaries Without Enabling

The Role of Family:

It’s natural to wonder where support ends and enabling begins. You love the person who is experiencing this condition, and you want to support them through a difficult time. However, in some cases, the accommodations families provide can worsen the failure to launch and the underlying conditions associated with it.

At The Sanctuary, we’re focused on seeking healing across the family system. While others might focus solely on the young adult, we understand that sometimes the whole family needs support. You may have all unconsciously adopted certain patterns and behaviors to cope with an unhealthy dynamic. We’re focused on empowering the family to create an environment for healing. We partner with families to build healthy boundaries and cultivate lasting, positive change together.

In some cases, family members participate in specific clinical therapies and active healing sessions to seek restoration as a group and enable long-term growth for the person experiencing failure to launch.
