Holistic Treatment for Anxiety

Holistic Treatment for Anxiety. Anxiety is normal. Whether it’s a reaction to a stressful day at work or it’s triggered by a traumatic life experience, we all feel anxiety at some point in our lives.

Anxiety is not inherently bad. It’s actually a defense mechanism – a survival instinct – designed to keep us safe. During dangerous or unfamiliar experiences, anxiety is one tool our body and mind use to help us stay alert and aware.

But too much of that fight-flight-freeze response flooding our bodies can lead to a heightened, prolonged level of stress. It’s scientifically proven that chronic anxiety can have lasting, debilitating effects not only on our ability to function day to day, but on our entire being.

Because anxiety is, to a degree, a natural experience, many of us might not recognize not even recognize the extent to which it affects us. But regardless of the severity of your experience, one thing’s for sure: you don’t have to be trapped in anxiety’s physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually draining cycles.

Anxiety disorders are not only manageable, they’re treatable. It’s entirely possible to fully recover from anxiety.

You can start your healing journey before you even come to The Sanctuary’s holistic anxiety recovery center. Keep reading to discover more about anxiety, including:

You don’t have to settle for just learning how to cope with anxiety’s side effects – you deserve so much more. You deserve to live your life free from self-doubt and fear of the unknown. You deserve a life free from anxiety.

What is Different About Holistic Treatment for Anxiety?

At The Sanctuary, holistic treatment means that we integrate a variety of therapies into highly personalized treatment programs for every individual. We believe anxiety is a whole-body condition because we are interconnected beings. So we treat every aspect of your system – not just one, most obviously affected part.

Traditional methods of treatment tend to focus on addressing one facet of your being, usually through counseling, psychotherapy and medication including antidepressants (like Prozac or Zoloft) or benzodiazepines (like Xanax or Ativan). Though useful, these methods typically only soothe the symptoms of anxiety rather than addressing and solving the root causes of anxiety.

While we do believe in the value of counseling and psychiatry, what makes The Sanctuary’s holistic treatment for anxiety different is that we don’t rely on just one form of treatment. We recognize the effects anxiety has on your entire psyche so we offer a wide, ever-changing variety and completely customizable set of healing approaches.

At our fully immersive holistic anxiety healing program, you’ll reconnect with yourself by tapping into the revitalizing energy of nature at our peaceful location just outside of Sedona. Fresh air, clean water and organic foods fuel your body, preparing you to embrace the evolution you’ll undergo.

We actively work with you to help you recognize not only how your symptoms have been manifesting, but why the anxiety has taken root in the first place. Ture holistic treatment for healing anxiety must address how anxiety affects your entire being, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

I’ve Been Through Countless AA Meetings for Anxiety. Is Holistic Treatment for Me?

There are many tools and methods available to help manage anxiety. For some people, 12-Step programs and AA meetings work – and that’s great! But for others, even with AA, anxiety never truly goes away.

If you’ve tried AA meetings for your anxiety but still feel stuck in an inescapable pattern of panic and fear, you’re not alone. Alternative anxiety treatments have helped so many people move past their limiting worldviews and negative self-talk to rediscover their inner strength, willpower and independence.

By fully utilizing so many different types of therapies and scientific practices, our program equips you to move beyond simply diagnosing your symptoms. Our goal is to help you uncover the core reason (or reasons) why you have anxiety in the first place. This is where true healing begins.

Holistic anxiety treatment at The Sanctuary helps you incorporate all of the tools you learn in treatment into your daily life, so you can sustain the benefits of your healing process long after you return home. We aim to empower you to step into the life you were born to live – one completely free from anxiety and its debilitating symptoms.

Who is Most Likely to Experience Regular Anxiety Episodes?

Anxiety is the most common mental illness in the world. Globally, one in every 13 people suffers from anxiety, including at least 40 million people in the United States, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Science has proven that both biological and environmental factors affect whether or not someone will experience anxiety in their lifetime. Biologically, researchers have discovered that anxiety disorders can run in families. If one or more people in your family experiences anxiety, you may have a greater genetic risk of also developing it. Anxiety can also be attributed to differences in brain chemistry or hormones, as well as pre-existing medical conditions.

There are environmental factors that also influence or increase the chances of a person developing anxiety. These include things we can’t control, like traumatic events, family conflict, parental behavior or natural disasters, and those we can, like caffeine intake, sleep patterns and diet.

Trauma can also trigger anxiety across different age groups and demographics. People with unresolved trauma may be susceptible to having anxiety, or even developing chronic anxiety or multiple anxiety disorders, if it’s left untreated.

What’s so Debilitating About Anxiety?

There is a difference between everyday anxiety and an anxiety disorder. When anxiety begins interfering with your ability to complete daily tasks, it becomes debilitating. This is a sign that it may be time to seek treatment.

Science has proven that anxiety isn’t just “all in our heads.” Anxiety is a whole-body condition, meaning it doesn’t just affect us emotionally, but also physically, mentally and spiritually. It has a tangible, quantifiable effect on our neurological systems.

Anxiety triggers our biological stress response, activating the part of the brain that controls the body’s fight, flight or freeze reactions. Left unchecked, a constant state of anxiety can overload the nervous system, leading to the crippling effects of anxiety that so many of us are familiar with.

Anxiety can also increase your chances of developing the following:

  • Physical illnesses
  • Cardiovascular disorders like obesity, heart disease and diabetes
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • High blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose

Chronic anxiety can also cause multiple anxiety disorders. The symptoms of anxiety can grow and manifest in new ways throughout our bodies and minds. Many times we’re faced with coping with not just anxiety, but an ever-growing list of symptoms.

This state of constant change is one reason anxiety breeds more fear, making it feel like a trap that’s too deep for us to climb out of on our own.

How Can I Prevent Anxiety?

All of us experience anxiety at some point. As you might already know firsthand, preventing anxiety is not just as simple as making yourself stop being worried, scared or stressed out.

Sometimes anxiety lives in our bodies on a genetic level and simply can’t be prevented. But it can be overcome. With the variety of therapies at our holistic treatment center, you can create new neurological pathways and create healthy behavioral patterns to start healing your anxiety and improving your life.

There are also some proactive measures you can take to reduce environmental risk factors known to aggravate anxiety’s symptoms. Here are some steps you can take to prevent anxiety from getting out of control:

  • Limit tobacco, alcohol and caffeine intake: All three of these substances have been proven to sustain the symptoms associated with anxiety.
  • Get enough rest: Exhaustion and sluggishness due to a lack of deep, restful sleep or because of irregular sleep patterns can trigger anxiety faster and more frequently.
  • Eat healthier foods: Regularly eating a balanced, healthy variety of foods can help positively regulate your mood on a consistent basis even when stressors happen. Foods with omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics have been known to help reduce anxiety.
  • Avoid processed foods: On a biophysical level, greasy, sugary, high-fat and processed foods cause a spike in insulin, which creates a sugar rush followed by a low. The work our body does to process these foods dramatically affects our moods, and unstable moods can lead to more anxiety episodes.
  • Exercise more: Physical activity stimulates the release of our “feel-good” hormones including endorphins, dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. These make us feel happy and play a key role in regulating mood. More stable moods equal less chance for fear and panic to strike. Even light physical activity has been shown to reduce the impact of anxiety when it does occur.
  • Learn relaxation techniques: Meditation, deep breathing, yoga, mindfulness and guided imagery switch your body from feeling tense to feeling calm. These practices have been proven to physically lower blood pressure, slow heart rate and reduce tension overall.

The most helpful way to prevent anxiety is to better understand yourself, and become more aware of how you respond in stressful environments. What does anxiety feel like inside of you? By recognizing this mind-body connection more often, you’ll be able to understand what’s happening and use that to your advantage ro reduce the frequency and severity of your symptoms.

Lastly, find what works best for you. What works well for someone else might not be the best option for you, and vice versa. So take your time, be patient with yourself and most importantly, don’t give up!

Is Holistic Non-12 Step Treatment for Anxiety Effective?

We full-heartedly believe that holistic treatment for healing anxiety is not only effective, but has the power to be truly life-changing. A life that’s meaningful, fun and free of anxiety is completely possible.

The term “non-12 Step” simply refers to a recovery program that doesn’t follow the precepts AA. At The Sanctuary, our non-12 Step approach to healing is based on the belief that rather than being powerless over your anxiety, you can be empowered yourself to change your relationship with it.

Just as your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual selves are linked, your treatment program at The Sanctuary is designed using multiple modalities that address each facet of your being. This allows you to experience healing on several planes – because anxiety doesn’t just affect one part of your being.

The flexibility of your treatment programs is another factor that makes The Sanctuary’s holistic non-12 Step treatment for anxiety so effective. At The Sanctuary, our program is completely customized to fit your unique personality, background, preferences and needs.

The way our different therapeutic modalities are applied and explored constantly change and adjust to reflect your own progress through your treatment. This allows you to experience a deeper, more well-rounded form of healing — one that lets you reclaim your life.
